A LITURGY FOR PALM SUNDAY

We expect so much from you:
to ride a stallion
to overthrow our oppressors
to win on our behalf.

In misguided joy we waive branches
In mistaken anticipation we lay down our cloaks.
But you know.
You know this praise is fleeting -
that days later we’ll condemn you.
Even still, you do not rebuke us.

And so, enter our misplaced hope
disappoint our demands for victory
disillusion our need for an easy fix
disrupt our vision of a life well lived.

All that you might be King
in your ways and in your time.
